Riding in a High Speed Bullet Train to Shanghai

At the Beijing Train station
A

s we headed to the Beijing Train station early morning, I couldn’t help but reflect on the three amazing days we spent in Beijing. From visiting the Forbidden City, once the imperial palace of the Ming and Manchu dynasties, to walking the Great Wall of China, Beijing offered a captivating journey through centuries of rich history. With every step that I took, there was always something new to learn, showcasing the amazing diversity and cultural wonders that China has to offer.

Throughout this trip there have been many first-time experiences, however riding a high-speed bullet train is an experience that cannot be replicated in the United States. The train ride from Beijing to Shanghai was a really great experience as we got to see life in China outside of the big cities. For the last week we’ve spent time in major cities where we were surrounded by skyscrapers and major landmarks, however this train ride gave us a bigger overview of the country’s landscape.

The technology and service available along the journey was also impressive. There was a live feed available on the screens which told us the speed of the train. On average, the train was traveling at around 344 km/h or 213mph. While the train had a cafeteria, there was also an option to order food from a train station. We scanned a code and ordered KFC from the train which was delivered to us on the next train station!

My favorite part of the day was the dinner hosted by Frankie Gao and Joanna Zhu who are UVA parents and one of our generous donors. Each course of the dinner was delicious and as I went to bed, all I could think of was about our second friendship exhibition match with Fudan University and Shanghai University of Sport students tomorrow.

I am very excited to make new friends and play some ping pong!
