ieter Giliomee is graduating with M.S. in the McIntire School of Commerce this year. In a conversation with UVA Global, he shares his international background, his reasons for choosing UVA, and his plans for the future.

You were born in Canada, but you have connections to Africa. Tell us about your background.

Giliomee: I was born in Saskatchewan, Canada as my mother was practicing medicine there at the time. My mother is from Namibia, where my grandfather worked as a fisherman. I grew up on a farm in South Africa, which allowed me to immerse myself in agricultural practices from a young age. Growing up on the farm, surrounded by the lush landscapes of South Africa, instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and outdoor activities, laying the foundation for my future interests and endeavors.

And let's not forget about our zebra named Tatjana! Tatjana arrived on our farm about 8 years ago, a lost zebra wandering along the river until she came across our herd of sheep. She decided to stay with this herd, and as of today, she acts as a guardian for the sheep, protecting them from predators such as honey badgers. Tatjana's presence on our farm not only brought joy and fascination but also taught me valuable lessons about the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of adapting to new environments.

How did this background influence your choice to attend college in South Africa?

Giliomee: Despite considering pursuing my undergraduate studies in Canada, my love for South Africa ultimately led me to stay and attend university there. South Africa is an incredibly diverse country, rich in cultures, with 11 official languages. Growing up, I interacted with people from various backgrounds, which allowed me to appreciate and learn from different cultures.

What drew you to the University of Virginia for your graduate studies?

Giliomee: Several factors drew me here. Firstly, my brother had studied at William & Mary and was familiar with the area, sharing his positive American experience which left a lasting impression. Additionally, the natural beauty of Virginia, particularly the Blue Ridge Mountains, appealed to my love for the outdoors and nature. I love mountain biking, a hobby that fits well with the hilly terrain of Charlottesville. Lastly, and more importantly, the Master of Commerce program at UVA resonated with my academic and professional aspirations, offering a comprehensive curriculum that perfectly aligned with my interests in data analytics, supply chain management, finance, and stock investments.

My unique background and ability to interact with people from diverse cultures have enabled me to adapt quickly and fit in at UVA.

How has your experience been so far?

My time at UVA has been truly remarkable. The vibrant atmosphere, engaging classes, and supportive community have made my time in Charlottesville unforgettable. I've not only encountered inspiring professors but also forged deep and lasting friendships, turning strangers into friends for life. UVA has provided me with an incredible journey of personal and academic growth, for which I am immensely grateful.

How has your global perspective enriched your UVA experience?

Giliomee: My unique background and ability to interact with people from diverse cultures have enabled me to adapt quickly and fit in at UVA. I actively sought to meet and learn from as many international students as possible, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures. I eagerly anticipate the Global Immersion Experience (GIE), where I'll have the opportunity to further enhance my understanding of global business practices and cultural diversity, particularly in countries like Argentina, Peru, and Costa Rica.

What are your plans after graduation?

Giliomee: I don't have concrete plans yet, though I'm confident in securing a role aligning with my interests in data analytics and/or finance. My goal is to leverage the knowledge and skills gained from my Master of Commerce degree to pursue a fulfilling career path. Additionally, I'm exploring opportunities in Canada, further broadening my horizons for potential endeavors.
