Finding Common Connections in an Extraordinary Trip

s UVA students, we naturally gravitate towards exciting opportunities, sometimes without all the details. Such was the case with me and the J-term course “Game Change: Bridging U.S. – China Divide Through Sport.” Little did I foresee that this seemingly ordinary trip would profoundly change my life.

First, let me tell you a little bit about me. I am a third-year nursing student from Palestine. Despite playing ping-pong competitively back home in Gaza, I had no connection to China, its culture, or its language. This left me feeling like I was staring at an opportunity to go to a place where ping-pong alone might not make me feel like I belonged.

A few of my friends reminded me of my Muslim background, and I wasn’t sure how China would respond to it. Nevertheless, my love for learning about new cultures, my passion for ping pong, creating people-to-people connections, and building diplomatic relationships between the US and China through my favorite sport were enough reasons to join this trip.

In the heart of China, a symphony of revelations played out—lessons in culture, life, people, and the profound journey of self-discovery. The realization that truly understanding every nook of Chinese culture might take a lifetime didn’t deter me. It encouraged me to put myself out there, have conversations with locals, ask for context, add Chinese students who I played table tennis with on WeChat, and even learn a few Chinese words to communicate.

In the compact span of 10 days, every detail became a vivid brushstroke—their attire, the symphony of flavors in food, the rhythmic beauty of their spoken language, the dragon’s dance on streets, and the ancient marvels carved into the fabric of time. So, if I were to sum up China in a single word, “rich” would be the unequivocal choice. A richness that seeps into every aspect—people, culture, history, scientific endeavors, and the awe-inspiring architecture of ages
past.

Looking back, I have unforgettable memories. From recreating the photo of the 1971 visit of the American Ping Pong team at the Great Wall, to visiting the Forbidden City, from eating Peking Duck at a local restaurant to enjoying the mountain view after a long hike to Victoria Peak, each one of them is special. Last but not least, sharing a connection with my Chinese teammates from Fudan University, Tsinghua University and Shanghai University of Sport. Since we did not speak the same language, we ended up repeating that one word we could understand, “Ping-pong,” and then laughed.

In all seriousness, if I were to leave you with one message, it would be that you don’t need to “get it” to appreciate it. Instead of allowing “differences” to be stumbling blocks, let them be the driving force propelling us into the profound depths of our shared humanity.
