Scott Heysell

Scott Heysell, MD/MPH directs the UVA Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE). Dr. Heysell is also an internal medicine physician specializing in infectious diseases and the Thomas H. Hunter Professor of International Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health in the School of Medicine. His primary clinical focus is caring for people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial diseases.

Dr. Heysell is an active researcher with experience living and working in places where tuberculosis is more common, including rural South Africa, the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, and Eastern Siberia. Dr. Heysell's research focuses on supporting partners to achieve their aims of reducing morbidity and mortality related to tuberculosis through correcting underlying drivers such as poverty, and health systems management. His research group also studies how to maximize drug efficacy to improve treatment outcomes through clinical trials. The work is supported by the National Institutes of Health and non-governmental organizations.
