Scott Heysell

Scott Heysell, MD/MPH directs the UVA Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE). Dr. Heysell is also an internal medicine physician specializing in infectious diseases and the Thomas H. Hunter Associate Professor of International Medicine in the Infectious Diseases and International Health Division in the School of Medicine. His primary focus is caring for people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial diseases.

Dr. Heysell is an active researcher and has field experience in HIV-drug-resistant TB-endemic areas, including rural South Africa, the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, and Eastern Siberia. Dr. Heysell's research focuses on supporting partners in TB-endemic settings to achieve their aims of reducing morbidity and mortality related to TB through correcting underlying drivers of TB including poverty, health systems management, and chronic medical conditions such as HIV and diabetes. His research group also studies how to maximize drug efficacy to improve treatment outcomes. The work is supported by the National Institutes of Health and non-governmental organizations.
