Upon graduating from UVA, Kevin entered the Foreign Service where he has served in various senior level roles, including five and a half years as the U.S. Ambassador to Colombia. The longest-serving ambassador to the country in a century, he oversaw U.S. relations with Colombia during a historically significant moment—the peace process with the FARC terrorist organization—and worked with two U.S. and two Colombian administrations. He retired with the rank of Career Minister, the second-highest rank in the Foreign Service.

Betsy taught public high school before joining the Foreign Service as a public diplomacy officer, serving multiple domestic and overseas tours and supporting the Department of Defense’s strategic communications efforts directed at overseas audiences. She retired from the Foreign Service in 2007 at the rank of Minister Counselor. In 2009, she returned to the Department of State as a senior advisor to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, and served in that capacity until 2012.

Since then, she has performed inspections for the Department of State’s Office of Inspector General and, as a member of the Grievance Staff in the Bureau of Human Resources, Betsy brought over 200 grievances to resolution. She also provided training in speechwriting, media skills and cross-cultural communications to department officers. She was an adjunct professor of public diplomacy at George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs from and at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.
