The 2024 People Power Academy presents an exciting opportunity for discourse and education about strategies for social change and movements around the globe. Hosted by the Center for Applied Nonviolent Actions and Strategies (CANVAS) with support from the University of Virginia’s Democratic Futures Project, and Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation, this conference brings together democracy activists from around the world for three days of keynote speakers, presentations from activists about their campaigns, panel discussions, study groups, and engaging workshops. The public is invited to join each day's sessions from 9:00 AM–12:00 PM EDT via livestream.

CANVAS, which was co-founded by Karsh Institute Practitioner Fellow in Democracy Srđa Popović, operates a network of international trainers and consultants with expertise in building and running successful nonviolent movements. Headquartered in Belgrade, Serbia, CANVAS has arranged to bring more than 60 leaders of these movements from around the world to attend this conference.

People Power Academy's goal is to present new perspectives and lessons learned that advocates can apply to their own causes. Activists seeking to challenge autocracy and address critical issues learn about countering propaganda, cybersecurity, and the transition process’ promises and pitfalls.

Presentations also look at creative tactics, effective campaign strategies, current events and strategies that apply to a variety of struggles around the globe. What are the inner workings of autocratic repression and methods of non-violent resistance?
