Diplomacy Lab

Diplomacy Lab

Experiential Learning with Real-World Applicability

Launched by the U.S. Department of State in 2013, Diplomacy Lab is a public-private partnership between the Department and more than sixty U.S. academic institutions. Diplomacy Lab enables the Department of State to “course-source” research related to foreign policy by harnessing the efforts of students and faculty at tertiary institutions across the country and is designed to address two priorities:

  1. Engaging people in the work of diplomacy, and
  2. broadening the State Department’s research base in response to a proliferation of complex global challenges.

Twice per year, State Department officers from around the world propose a series of research projects related to foreign policy. Please review the Spring 2025 project menu below. Faculty at partner universities "bid" on a project they'd like to lead a student team in researching the following semester. Research can be conducted as part of an existing course or developed into an independent course.

Projects must be undertaken by a team of students - not individually. Students may be at the undergraduate or graduate level (as specified in each project description).

Diplomacy Lab projects address a range of international issues and challenges, including climate change, democracy and human rights, global health, energy security, gender equality, economic policy, trafficking in persons, food security, and conflict and stabilization. The State Department encourages bids from faculty in a wide range of disciplines.

Once a bid has been accepted, faculty are committed to carry through these research projects with their students. Students will engage directly with officials throughout the semester in a series of three teleconferences, including a presentation of their findings at the completion of the project to the ambassador, deputy chief of mission, and other high ranking colleagues at the site submitting the project.

The deadline for UVA faculty to submit bids for the Spring 2025 semester is October 3.

Submit bids by sending the following required information to UVA's Director of Global Initiatives, Tina Mangieri

  1. Project ID # (from Project Menu)
  2. Faculty Advisor name
  3. Faculty Advisor email
  4. Bid Description (max 300 words)
  5. Academic Level that will undertake the project
    1. Undergraduate
    2. Graduate
    3. Hybrid

Please only bid on projects you can undertake if selected. As there are no “alternate bids,” a second Round 2 Project Menu will be available in late October (for Spring projects) and late February (for Fall term). The Round 2 Menu includes only projects that remain unclaimed at that point. Read more about Diplomacy Lab here.

Essay

In a special recorded message at the opening of the Spring 2024 Diplomacy Lab Fair at the US Department of State in Washington DC last month, United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that for every problem, someone, somewhere has an answer, or at least an idea worth trying. Some of the ideas that he referred to came from the University of Virginia students participating in the Diplomacy Lab program.
