ear Members of UVA’s International Community,

University leadership has been monitoring reports of heightened immigration enforcement activity across U.S. campuses in recent weeks, including the cancellation of student visas and the detention and threatened deportation of international students and faculty. We recognize and sympathize with the alarm and anxiety that many of you experience when witnessing the sudden detention and threatened deportation of international students, scholars, and faculty. We will continue to closely track these events, as well as the legal challenges to these actions centering on First Amendment and due process rights of those affected.

As of today, the University has learned that one current student’s visa has been canceled, and we are in touch with the student to offer support. In the meantime, we wanted to draw your attention to the latest information and advice on current immigration enforcement efforts on the University’s Federal Information webpage. You will find there key updates and guidance regarding current immigration issues. In addition, international students can find more detailed information and other resources on the International Students and Scholars Program’s website; international faculty and staff can consult Human Resources’s webpage on immigration updates affecting employees.

Our international community stands as a remarkable source of strength and vibrancy at the University, and your presence on Grounds makes critical contributions to our research, teaching, clinical care, and public service missions. Drawn from every corner of the planet, you come to learn, teach, research, and otherwise contribute to our academic enterprise, all the while enriching us with your scholarship, invaluable and diverse perspectives, and friendship. You are an integral part of our community and essential to our status as a global university and we are committed to doing all we can to support you during these challenging times.

For our international student and scholar community, please be in touch with an advisor in the International Student and Scholar Program office to discuss any concern you have about your immigration status at either (434) 982-3010 or by email at [email protected]. You can also set up an appointment to meet with an advisor virtually at https://outlook.office365.com/book/[email protected]/. If you need personal support, please contact CASS in Student Health and Wellness by phone at 434-924-7133 or by email at [email protected] to learn about available support and resources at any time.

International faculty and staff should consult their HR business partner with any questions about their immigration status. If you need personal support, please contact UVA’s Faculty and Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) at [email protected] or at 434-243-2643 to learn about available support and resources at any time.

Sincerely,

John Kosky
