Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of a donor with strong support from President Ryan, this month we are thrilled to announce a major new program that will provide need-based financial support for UVA students to have practical experiences overseas next summer. The Walker Global Experience Scholarships will provide up to $5,000 to any student who receives Access UVA funding to cover expenses such as program tuition and fees, transportation, room/board, and incidental expenses in about two dozen credit-bearing applied learning experiences abroad in summer 2025. Eligible programs include hands-on courses on environmental sustainability in Sweden, participatory development in Morocco, community organizing in South Africa, social entrepreneurship in the Caribbean, business practice in Spain, the experience of the Odyssey in modern-day Greece, and internships on every continent on Earth (except Antarctica). I urge undergraduate students to seize this opportunity by making an appointment today with our Education Abroad Advisers in the International Studies Office to enroll in one of these exciting opportunities before they fill up.
Major New Education Abroad Opportunities
Major New Education Abroad Opportunities

he 2024-25 academic year is shaping up to be UVA’s biggest year yet for undergraduate study abroad opportunities, with significant new financial aid that will enable hundreds of students to participate in dozens of previously inaccessible programs across multiple disciplines around the globe. With so many unprecedented opportunities and generous amounts of financial assistance, now is the time for our undergraduate students to sign up and participate in these life-changing experiences!
The Walker Scholarships are just one of many resources available for students interested in pursuing an international experience. Next January, the University will make available additional financial aid to students to participate in a record number of J-term education abroad courses on tap for January 2025 – up 33% over last year’s offerings – including support for transportation expenses. We are also continuing to offer full support to all students who need assistance in obtaining a passport for international travel. Truly, exciting international experiences in more destinations than ever before have never been more accessible to UVA students. The International Studies Office is ready to work with each undergraduate to put together a low-cost life-changing international experience for all. Don’t delay!
