It’s a wrap for Global Week

Global Week once again hosted a series of in-person opportunities for engagement this year after being all virtual last year. The 25 events hosted this year were a combination of in-person, virtual and hybrid events which included conversations with those working on a global scale and opportunities to learn more about getting involved globally on Grounds.

Global Week is organized by the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs every year and is an opportunity for those interested in global topics to learn more about the research opportunities, collaborations and services available at UVA.

Some of the popular conversations from this year’s Global Week were conversations on understanding “how study abroad works” at UVA, careers in diplomacy and public affairs, conversations with ambassador from Egypt His Excellency Motaz Zahran, and ex-ambassador of Afghanistan Ambassador Roya Rahmani and a keynote panel on ‘Fight for democracy in Myanmar’ which included Burmese pro-democracy activist Myo Yan Naung Thein, and Ambassador Scot Marciel who served as U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar from March 2016 through May 2020.

The popular Passport Drive was also back this year for students, faculty, staff, and their families with almost 40 people stopping at Hotel A for their passports. Among them were twenty-five students who were awarded a need-based scholarship to cover the cost of applying for a passport at this event.

Students, staff and faculty also came to a table outside Hotel A to hear about global opportunities available and to pin their countries on a world map. More than 225 students stopped by to enter raffles for gift certificates for local food trucks.

For students looking to “stay global” in the workplace or seeking global career opportunities, the UVA Career Center and UVA Global provided a series of events focused on specific careers.  (Global Fellowships Workshop, Teaching Careers Abroad, Careers in Diplomacy & Public Policy, International Development & Humanitarian Aid Careers)

Multiple events highlighted performing arts and cuisine from around the world, and a multilingual “café” gave participants an opportunity to mingle with speakers of many languages. Morven Farms hosted a workshop on the art of calligraphy in partnership with East Asia Center which drew in students as well.

A critical part of global exchange is the sharing of stories, and during Global Week, UVA community got a chance to hear from Peace Corps volunteers about their triumphs and struggles, and Global Studies alumni share their insights with current and prospective majors.

It ended with the start of the Virginia Film Festival which included a series of movies with international themes. After a week of celebration, reflection, and engagement around all things global at UVA, it’s a wrap for Global Week.
