illian Manternach is a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Public Policy and Leadership with a minor in Middle Eastern Language and Culture. After studying abroad in Meknes, Morocco during Summer 2023 and again in Amman, Jordan during J-Term 2024, she decided to join the Education Abroad team as a student intern to encourage other students to have eye-opening global experiences like hers. UVA Global caught up with her to talk about her adventures abroad, the impact on her understanding of her studies, and her advice for other students interested in the global.

You have studied in both Morocco and Jordan through Education Abroad programs and you are doing a minor in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures. How did you get interested in Arabic and the Arab world?

Manternach: My interest in Arabic and the Arab world sparked from a desire to understand diverse cultures and perspectives. Studying in Morocco and Jordan allowed me to immerse myself in rich histories, vibrant traditions, and unique ways of life. Through these experiences, I not only honed my language skills but also developed a deep appreciation for the nuances of the cultures I encountered. My minor in Middle Eastern Languages and Culture further fuels my curiosity, as I continue to explore the complexities and beauty of the region. Each experience has deepened my commitment to learning and fostering cross-cultural connections.

Tell us about a highlight during your time abroad.

Manternach: Experiencing Eid al-Adha, one of the two main Holidays in Islam, while in Morocco was truly unforgettable. The entire city of Meknes was filled with excitement and activity as families prepared for the celebrations. My host family was absolutely incredible and made sure to involve my roommate and I in all the festivities. One of the most heartwarming aspects was witnessing their entire extended family come together for prayer and to help prepare (the very large and very delicious) shared meal. Overall, it highlighted a beautiful blend of devotion, community, and cultural heritage that deepened my appreciation for Moroccan traditions.

By supporting other students’ international endeavors, I hope to contribute to a more globally engaged community at UVA. This role allows me to connect my personal experiences with my desire to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and fully embrace the world around them.

What drew you to becoming an Education Abroad intern and how do you bring your own global experiences to the work?

Manternach: I was drawn to the role of Education Abroad intern because I am passionate about fostering cross-cultural understanding and helping others navigate their own global journeys. My study abroad experiences in Morocco and Jordan ignited a deep appreciation for the transformative power of immersing oneself in different cultures. I want to share this enthusiasm with fellow students, guiding them as they explore new perspectives and enhance their educational experiences. By supporting their international endeavors, I hope to contribute to a more globally engaged community at UVA. This role allows me to connect my personal experiences with my desire to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and fully embrace the world around them.

How have your education abroad experiences influenced your views on public policy and leadership?

Manternach: My education abroad experiences have profoundly shaped my views on public policy and leadership by highlighting the importance of context and cultural sensitivity in decision-making. In Morocco and Jordan, I witnessed how local customs and societal values directly influence effective governance and community engagement. These experiences emphasized the critical role of crafting policies that embrace diverse viewpoints and foster cooperation. I also learned that strong leadership relies on empathy and the ability to listen to the needs of the people being served. Ultimately, these insights have inspired me to pursue policy topics that prioritize community involvement and work to address the unique challenges faced by different populations.

What would be your advice to other students at UVA interested in global topics and majors?

Manternach: My advice to students at UVA interested in global topics and majors is to embrace every opportunity for exploration and connection. Engage with diverse communities on campus, attend events that highlight different cultures, and seek out study abroad programs that align with your interests. Don’t hesitate to reach out to faculty and peers who share your passions; their insights can be extremely helpful! I also highly recommend immersing yourself in language learning, as it can open doors to deeper understanding and communication. Finally, approach your studies with an open mind and a willingness to learn, this will ultimately enrich your college experience and broaden your perspective in ways you could never imagine.
