VA Global and the UVA's East Asia Center recently co-sponsored a visit from Minister Jing Quan from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. Minister Jing Quan is the third-highest ranking diplomat at the Chinese Embassy in the United States. Accompanying the Minister were Counselor Wang Peijun and Second Secretary Li Huaiyu from the Congressional and Sub-national Affairs Section; and Counsellor Zhang Yun, Third Secretary Liu Xiaojing, and Attaché Fang Yiwei from the Office of Educational Affairs.

Minister Jing met with Ambassador Steve Mull, Vice Provost for Global Affairs, and Dudley Doane, Director of International Studies Office around U.S. China higher education opportunities and later participated in a round table with UVA faculty and students.

The event revolved around contemporary issues in U.S.-China cooperation and competition, with a special focus on educational exchange between the two countries. The discussion was led by Aynne Kokas, Director of East Asia Center and included Jennifer Bair, professor of sociology and associate dean for social sciences; Charles Laughlin, professor of Chinese literature and chair of the Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures & Cultures; John Owen, Professor in the Department of Politics; and students from the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Architecture.

After the roundtable discussion, UVA international students from China accompanied Minister Jing and his delegation for a tour of the Academical Village, the historical buildings on central Grounds designed by the University’s founder and America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson.
