Join Central Americans for Empowerment at UVA (CAFÉ at UVA) and Political Latinxs for Movement and Action in Society (PLUMAS) as we host Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective and Heidy Alachán from the legal team of the Movimiento Amplio Por la Dignidad y la Justicia - Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice (MADJ) as part of the Witness for Peace Southeast 2019 Speaker Tour.
Heidy Alachán is a lawyer, writer and activist with Movimiento Amplio por la Dignidad y la Justicia (MADJ) - Broad Movement for Dignity and Justice. Along with her training as an attorney and teacher, Heidy holds a master's in Human Rights and Democratization in Latin America and the Caribbean. She forms part of the MADJ legal team representing the family of internationally renowned indigenous and environmental rights activist, Berta Cáceres, in their struggle for justice for her assassination.
MADJ is a social and political movement committed to working against impunity and corruption while building alternatives rooted in transparency, dignity and respect to human rights and the environment. MADJ communities are on the frontlines protecting their natural resources from unlawful exploitation through resistance camps, legal battles and incredible grassroots organizing. MADJ has been active in resistance movements in Honduras in the context of the 2009 coup, the 2017-2018 post-electoral crisis and, most recently, in the national strike by teachers and healthcare workers.
