Dr. James Scanlon-Canegata is a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies.
Murasaki Shikibu's The Tale of Genji, a sweeping portrait of the Heian period, is known for its vividly detailed descriptions that bring the world to life. Poetry, painting, calligraphy, music, dance, and depictions of court ceremonies help illustrate the tale with vivid realism. In this talk, Dr. Scanlon-Canegata will talk about the role of saibara, a genre of rustic folk songs, in constructing and giving life to visceral and carnal, as well as nostalgic moments of human connections within the story.
