Global Week at UVA is a celebration of International Education Week (IEW), an initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. Students, faculty, and staff at the University engage in a variety of education abroad programs, research, collaboration, and service across the globe.

All of these activities result in a knowledge exchange that enriches the community on Grounds and around the world. Global Week at UVA seeks to showcase these activities each fall.

Keynote Event: Global Democracy Series – Fight for Myanmar’s Democracy

It has been almost six months since Burma’s military seized power in a coup, overthrowing and imprisoning leaders of the elected government. The panel will look at the history of Myanmar's struggle for democracy. The Panelists for the discussion include:

  • Myo Yan Naung Thein - is a Burmese pro-democracy activist, and former chief research officer of the National League for Democracy's Central Committee for Research and Strategy Studies. Myo Yan Naung Thein is the founder and director of the Bayda Institute.
  • Erik Braun - Associate Professor of Religious Studies, UVA. Professor Braun's area of expertise is Burmese (Myanmar) Buddhism. He is interested in Burmese traditions of meditation and, following from that, in the transformations of meditative practices (and the understandings of reality they convey explicitly and implicitly) as they spread around the world. 
  • Ambassador Scot Marciel - Mr. Marciel is a career diplomat with 35 years of experience in Asia and around the world. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar from March 2016 through May 2020, during the difficult Rohingya crisis and a challenging time for both Myanmar’s democratic transition and the United States-Myanmar relationship.

The discussion will be moderated by Ambassador Steve Mull, Vice Provost for Global Affairs. There will be a reception at Hotel A following the panel discussion.

Global Journeys: Careers in Diplomacy & Public Policy

In this panel, UVA alumni will share insights about how their experiences at UVA have prepared them for careers in the international public policy. 

Panelists:

  • Ambassador Dorothy C. Shea is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with 30 years of experience. She was appointed as Ambassador to the Lebanese Republic on February 14, 2020. Before that, she has served in Egypt, Jerusalem and in a variety of positions at the State Department. She holds degrees from UVA and Georgetown University, in addition to National War College (NWC), where she earned a master’s degree in National Security Strategy. 
  • Ambassador Joan Polaschik is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service and Deputy Director of Foreign Service Institute. Ambassador Polaschik’s career has focused on the Middle East and North Africa, with assignments as Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs (2017-2019) and U.S. Ambassador to Algeria (2014-2017). She earned a BA from UVA and MSFS from Georgetown University. 
  • H. Alexander Henegar has served as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State since 2005. He has advanced U.S. foreign policy goals in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan, the Dominican Republic, and Croatia, where he currently serves as Chief of Political and Economic Affairs at U.S. Embassy Zagreb. Alex received a B.A. from UVA and an M.A. from Georgetown University. 
  • Lynette Evans-Tiernan is Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of State where she started in 2006. She has worked for 15 years as Civil Service employee and 10 years in the public affairs at the Department of State. She received a B.A. from UVA and an M.A. from Georgetown University.

The panel is moderated by Ambassador Steve Mull, Vice Provost for Global Affairs. Ambassador Mull joined UVA in August 2018 after a 36-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, which included serving in a broad range of national security positions in the US Department of State.

21st century Civil Protest: A Case Study of the Nigeria #EndSars Protest

Six 2021 Mandela Washington Fellows* will present on and facilitate a virtual discussion around the focus, structure, and impact of Nigeria’s grassroots #EndSARS campaign, which targets a special police unit implicated in widespread human rights violations but has catalyzed a broader call for social justice among African youth across the continent. Speakers will draw parallels with the Black Lives Matter movement in order to lead students to reflect on the power, place, and opportunity of civilian protests and civic engagement.

Health Impacts of Climate Change 

12-1pm

The UVA School of Nursing continues to support a philosophy of sustained cultural engagement with long-term global partners, currently remotely. Long-term partners at the Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University (BICU) School of Nursing located on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, are collaborating on efforts to build community resilience against the immediate health impacts of climate change, both in Nicaragua and here in Virginia. Join us virtually to showcase one of these initiatives: student-driven case-studies from BICU nursing students and from our 4th year NUCO 4210 course, and a presentation on the immediate impacts of climate change in Nicaragua from long-term colleague Joel Campbell (from the CEDEHCA human rights organization)!
